Tahiti one geographic region of the Society Islands ( queen : Îles de la Société ), more specifically to the Leeward Islands ( queen : Îles du Vent ). It is the largest and most populous island of the archipelago. Tahiti is an island double from Tahiti Nui (big Tahiti) and the smaller and less populated Tahiti Iti (Little Tahiti), which are connected by the isthmus of Taravao.
The landscape is characterized by steep peaks, the highest, the Mont Orohena in Tahiti Nui, rises 2241 meters. The highest elevation on Tahiti Iti, Mont Ronui is 1332 meters. Rivers have carved deep valleys bounded by steep rocky ridges. The interior is densely overgrown with tropical vegetation and is accessed by dirt roads and footpaths only locally. The settlements are in the narrow coastal strip, the north and west of Tahiti is the most densely populated. The interior of the island is uninhabited.
Contrary to popular belief Tahiti is not surrounded by white beaches. The island has relatively few natural beaches, which consist mainly of black, basaltic sand and are distributed mainly along the west coast. The clean, white hotel beaches are usually artificially
