Moorea is one of the geographically Society Islands (French: Îles de la Société ), more specifically to the Leeward Islands (French: Îles du Vent ). She is the younger sister of Tahiti and Tahiti, in sight, from the west coast only by a strait separated by 17 km. In the legend it is
, Moorea is the dorsal fin of a large fish. The island has about the form of a set at a point, equilateral triangle , cut deep into the northern side of the two bays Baie de Cook (Cook's Bay) and Baie d'Opunohu. Many rivers have steep, rocky ridges created by separate valleys.
